Composer's Bill of Rights
I like the sentiment of the document that ASCAP put together. How nice it would be to be paid for every use and download. Is it realistic at this point? No. Simple as that. I think ASCAP and those who have signed the document know that. Anything that helps awareness is fine, though awareness doesn’t lead to compliance. Now that the public expects free content we’re not going back to previous music business models. It’s up to composers and artists to figure out ways to monetize the art so that they can sustain its creation. Some artists won’t survive and make enough to continue, but even in the old system this was the case. Only a small fraction can live off of the art. So now we have to minimize the costs associated with creation and distribution and figure out other revenue streams. The old system had revenue down, but you had to get past the gatekeepers and pay them almost all of it anyway.
